I worked for the Northern Pacific on a 4-man section in 1963 that was stationed at Florence, population 50. Maybe on this very bridge, certain it was close by. A log had floated against the pilings and had to be removed. As a 19-year old, I was elected to hang over the side of the bridge by a rope, with a chain-saw, then saw the log into pieces. Most of my weight was on the log until the last cut, then I was pulled up, still hanging onto the saw. That section crew is long gone now, and Florence has grown to several thousand, but oh the memories. Our section had the whole valley from Missoula to Darby which was the end of the branch line. Lots of sugar beets, logs and lumber was hauled on the two trains a week which came up the valley.
