The contrast between the locomotive and the rest of the train is like day and night. It's almost as if the diesel is a color photograph while the freight cars are in black-and-white. And about the cab modification; it does a lot for the engine's look.......a lot of wrong that is.

Interesting observation on the train. Only the brand new loco stands out from the dry, winter time landscape. At second look the freight consist itself is worth remarking on. At the time the most common car on China Railways was the high sided gondola, as seen here. These were used for both bulk loads and merchandise (covered in tarps)—hugely labor intensive and basically a 19th century railway practice that stands in stark contrast to the modern GE loco! The Eire-built product was an unexpected sight that day as almost all the freights (and some passenger trains) on this busy main were still behind steam power when this photo was taken—nearly 27 years ago.
