Can any one provide me with a little more history on this unit? I know nothing about it. Thanks.

A real beauty! This locomotive was built by EMD in Nov 1939. The E series was a passenger locomotive, and this E3 was one of the first high production models. The ACL order two (500,501) for service on "The Champion" route between New York City and Miami, Florida. Rated at 2,000 hp, powered by two 567-A 12-cylinder prime movers. It is 71ft long, weighs 56,500 lbs and can produce 31,000lbs of continuous tractive effort. Only 17 E3 units were built. The 501 remained in service until 1970, operating over 6 million miles. This distinction made the 501 the most traveled E unit in U.S. history. the NC DOT Rail Division purchased the 501 in 1998, and placed the locomotive on long term loan to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC.
