Objects on the Earth's equator are moving approximately 1,000 MPH. Here in LA it's probably more like 750 MPH. So to match up precisely the speed of the stock car and my camera, indeed I used a tripod to make sure I eliminated any movement of the stock car.

And perhaps a Kenyon gyro-stabilizer in case of earthquake?
