Great photo, Bob. It's amazing to see that dock still exists with rails intact 30 years after service ended: http://tinyurl.com/cl4rzhk

I have a flyer at home - unfortunately I am not there now, that advertises the last run of the "Ann Rambler" and the 1983 date sounds about right. I'm thinking that this was a special passenger train that I assume ran from Toledo, OH to the port of Frankfort, MI. I say "special," since my 1955 Official Railway Guide indicates that the Ann Arbor RR had freight only service. The Ann Arbor Railroad Steamships had four routes ran from that port to Menominee, Manistique, MI and also Manitowec, Kewaunee and Marinette WI. Don't you love those native American names?

Are you sure she is departing, and not docking? Just curious, as the direction of the camper truck seems to mean that the vehicles backed on to the ferry. Also, there is a person in the pilot house at the rear of the ferry. Lastly, there are no waves, or wake coming off the bow of the ferry, but the froth at the stern seem to indicate reverse thrust. I'm no expert, so excuse me if I am wrong.

The Viking is leaving port. The operator you see is lowering the sea gate to protect the car deck.
