Great photo! I have family from Steubenville and well as Wellsville and East Liverpool up the Ohio River a bit. I have fond memories of my great Grandma's backyard abutting the tracks in E.L.O. and being fascinated by all the PRR trains back in the 60's when I was but a pre-teen. Thanks for flashback!

I think Dean Martin(actor, singer) was from here. I love the picture. Truly AMERICANO.

So much detail and nostalgia in this photo. It makes me smile. Thanks for posting it.

My father, Bob Massey, worked for the Railway Express Agency in Springfield, IL, in the 1950's and 1960's. A hardworking veteran who worked multiple jobs for much of life, his evening shift as a driver included unloading both Gulf, Mobile and Ohio and Illinois Central trains. (Today's Abraham Lincoln Presidental Museum now sits on the former site of the REA.) I truly appreciate both the photographer and website for posting this photo and refreshing some great childhood memories, including playing on the baggage carts while waiting for the trains to arrive. (Supervised, of course. It was, after all, the 1950's!)

The ability of the photographer to capture the atmosphere of the time is impressive and adds so much.

Exquisite, knock-out scenes from a different era. Thanks so much for sharing these images. A 1953 Railway Guide lists two westbounds on the Panhandle around midday: No.11, a Mail & Express run for St. Louis, due Steubenville 11am with "only coaches for passengers" and No.205 for Cincinnati followed at 11:30am that included dining and lounge cars Pittsburgh to Columbus. What a pleasant manner in which to tour the environs!

Whenever I see photos of express being unloaded from "baggage" cars I'm reminded of the incessant "cheeping" that would come from the the cardboard & wire "flats" that REA shipped baby chicks in. Those little yellow fellas could sure make a racket. Their appearance was a sure sign of a coming spring.

The way it used to be and wish to return to. Such a beautiful shot.
