I actually got to ride the Ski Train shortly before Christmas in 1986. I flew into Denver (Old Denver Airport) now gone. Went out as part of my job, a scaffolding training course. was there over a weekend. Some members of our class were skiers and I would never miss a chance to ride a train, so I asked for the train trip only, no lift tickets, etc. I remember that the Ex-PA B unit / Steam Generator or Power car was behind the power. Our train was put into a siding west bound for many minutes which we were told was not normal, eventually an east bound coal train arrived. I was in a dutch door as it passed and saw the reason for the delay. Between the first two units both porches were piled high with Evergreen Trees that the crew had stopped and cut for their homes. I would not take anything for having spent so few dollars for such a wonderful trip, I think that i spent more for food than I paid for the train fare. Riding down the east face of the mountains after dark with the coach lights out, and seeing the lights of Golden and Denver was wonderful and unexpected.
