I have never used one but seen it done dozens of times. I believe that the hole that you put the grease stick comes from the company with a tube. Shop people soon remove it because it is a pain to use. However, another more dangerous pain is to be avoided. DO NOT put your fingers in the grease stick hole. I have seen the remaining finger tip of one shop worker who had lost the rest of his finger when it got caught by the mechanism.
