Very sad, indeed.

The last high hood SD40, now this one should be saved.

I really like the lighting and composition of this photo, Chris, but I have to confess it makes me blue. I have a slide of this locomotive (still wearing its Southern paint) pulling an empty rail train through Boswell, Indiana, on April 21, 1988. So, almost a quarter of a century later, the old 3200 finally meets its fate and it's kind of sad to see it go. One thing is sure; it had a long and productive life for its owner, but as we all know, nothing lasts forever in the railroad world. Thanks for the memories and maybe I'll try to get my shot of the 3200 past the screeners once again.

While the last one may not have been saved, thanks to the efforts of a couple of NS employees, the first SOU and N&W SD40s were set aside for preservation by NS. They were able to convince Wick Moorman the units were worthy of doing so. Now, they just need a home.
