I think the engineer would be a little sore after sitting on that little toad stool all day. What is the big wheel infront of Fireman? oil firing valve?

Tugboat, that is the engineers (drivers) side and thus the wheel is for adjusting the reverser/cylinder cut-off, I guess in much the same way as it would on USA locomotives mid position will be mid-gear (natural), although very few UK steam loco's had steam operated reverser's and even fewer were ever fitted with oil firing in the entire history of UK steam traction. Coal being the cheap, plentiful and favoured fuel (even then there is little chance of finding a mechanical stoker). Oh and for the time these engines wee built, 1926, that seat would have been the norm for this type of mixed traffic loco!
