What is the Black Box with the yellow dots top of cab right of center? Havent been in any newer locomotives and never seen this device before.

The box is the cab signal display, this one looks to be set up for position-light signals.

Could be some type of filter seeing that there is a pipe connected to it.

A filter, really! Its the cab signal display. The pipe is the elctrical conduit coming out of it.

I have been on that side of the engine, and the only thing that was there was the door. No in cab signals, no phone, and the colar was gray. At that time the Conductor was in the cab at the rear of the train, and all Southern engines were high hood. Over on the other side at the controls you would find all the items. Times are a changing. Oh by the way we didn't have air condition in the engine.
