Excellent capture. I remember watching these as a kid in Kaley Yard and getting shots of them. Wish I had a better quality camera back then. There was a few of these that hung out in Central Florida in the mid 80's.

It amazes me that they could take a fine looking locomotive such as the B23-7 and make it look like this. Still, I would have liked to have caught a few of them before tehy met the torch. In fact, I think one of them should have been saved to a museum somewhere... maybe the Ugly Hall of Fame!

The last one of these that I saw, was in northern Kentucky. It had been down graded to a booster or B- unit. It had all of it's windows plated over, possibly because of not having the latest F R A required glazing. Built on trade in E M D trucks these were always strange looking. Another reason for the search for ways to do away with cabooses was to prevent accidents to crew members riding in them caused by slack action in the train.

Everyone say's these locomotives are ugly, but I beg to differ. I always thought they were neat looking engines, but I think they would have looked a little better with a three window cab.

I guess that my memory bank is in good operating condition. To find out just how good it was, please click on GE BQ23-7 here at Rail Pictures as I did last night and go all the way to the last photo to see the GE BQ23-7 B, with it's plated over windows !

I don't think they are ugly just different looking. I would love to see some pictures of the cab interior and what the crew quarters looked like. Also, I wonder if there was a bathroom in there?
