I had that happen to me once. I started hearing bells in my head, only in my case, they just said I was nuts. :)

I'd love to be the Trainmaster on that day.

I remember as a young boy in 1974, my mom's car stalled out on a crossing in Summerville, Georgia and seeing a huge black Southern Railway engine moving toward us and I really thought I was about to die. Pretty powerful thoughts at 4 years old. Thankfully it was a slow moving train. The engineer stopped the train. The engineer radioed for a tow truck at the crossing and he paid the towing bill. From that day forward my mom always stoping at all crossings. To this day, I stop all all crossings, regardless of traffic or how quiet it is. It is the train you don't hear that will kill you.

Nice thought sir but...stopping at all railroad crossings regardless is not a very safe idea. I wouldn't trust the driver behind me. I drive city buses and a school bus for a living and I can't tell you how many times I've heard a car behind me lock up their brakes because they didn't realize that my bus had stopped. I have never been hit at a railroad crossing though.

Another thing to consider from this unfortunate event. Had the car in the accident been a more modern designed Asian death trap, the injury sustained by the driver would have been much different. Most Americans don't realize that they are responsible for the US auto industry decline. It is funny to see an American company logos on asians cars, such as Harley-Davidson and Caterpiller. Every time I see such a sight, I stop and ponder if the driver even thinks on how out of place it looks.

This was taken on September 12, 1991, just the day after nine eleven.

Last time I saw the news, nine eleven was in 2001, not 1991, even though it does seem a long time ago.
