Watching for loose items on a train is always a good idea. A broken steel lading strap, dragging and flailing wildly, cured me of standing too close!

I once took a piece of ballast to the chest from a passing Conrail freight and I wasn't standing too close. Hopper door was ajar and they were inadvertently ballasting the WLR and pelting railfans at track speed. I was honored to receive such a gift from Big Blue. Snow, sun, and an SD45; makes a winning combo, Chuck!
