The "Green Sling" being used between the crane and the pilot end plate is a rather new addition in "Heavy Lift" operations. The sling is a Fiber Optic sling with a green fabric wear padded sheath. All lifting slings contain multiple strands of the lifting material, any broken strands will reduce the load weight which may be lifted. Broken strands in a steel sling are often very hard to find during the required careful inspection prior to making a lift. With a Fiber Optic sling, a light source is connected to one end of the sling and a view screen is connected to the other end. Any broken strands in the sling will not pass light, making it very easy to count any failed strands.
