You Dream Dreams when you see a picture like this. I wonder what the sound was like, what the smell was like. We will never see a sight like this again. A moment gone with the wind.

With UP's Plans to reacquire and restore 4014, we could very well see the 4014 team up with the 844.

Oh Lucas, I think, You dream another dream! I can´t imagine, that UP or anybody else will revitalize a Big Boy! But of course I hope, that I´m wrong.

Lucas is correct ... The UP has made an overture to the southern California chapter of the RLHS to restore their Big Boy, #4014. But many at the RLHS are balking! This was posted on the Trains Magazine news section, including quotes from people at the UP.

Could you imagine the crowd an operating 4-8-8-4 would attact. UP #3985 drew big crowds everywhere it went. Many people, myself included, never saw big articulated steam run even back in the 50's when they were last used. They only ran on heavier mainline track that also had additional spacing on corners. Being retired, I will travel anywhere in this country to see a 4-8-8-4 operating. Just hope it happens while I can still travel and enjoy the sight.

Do some reading on Big Boys, and you will see that restoring one is the easy part, being able to run one on any kind of regular basis, like the other two UP has, is the hard part. UP had to make some serious changes to their infrastructure to accommodate the 4000s before they could run them. And these changes were only made between Ogden UT and Cheyenne WY. According to Steve Lee in a video interview he gave on this subject, those changes don't exist anymore.
