I am indeed fortunate to live near to these wonderful Pennine Hills. Less fortunate to remember only the last two or three years of steam in the Pennines. Apart from the loss of the lines in the foreground, this scene is still instantly recognisable today. The route is still busy, but now sees little other than the ubiquitous diesel multiple units, this great East-West rail highway having given up all pretence at competing for freight traffic with its hopelessly congested motorway counterpart, the M62. So sad.

What terrific quality. We owe a lot around these parts of the UK to Kennneth for his attention to the local area. Whilst most other photographers headed for the Pacifics on the main lines on sunny days, KF stuck to his roots, and left a fantastic legacy of working steam in the north. Thanks for your efforts, Brian.
