I'm not sure of what they are testing for, but you can rest assured it involves a computer.

The mines I have been to usually check BTU, ash content and moisture content to ensure that the coal meets customer requirements.

This is pretty much standard practice. Depending on the customer specs, they test for sulphur content, btu, ash, moisture, etc. Most of the time the samples are taken in a less obvious manner, but it's always done. Nice shot of an interesting aspect of the coal mining business!
