Umm, couldn't they have made it just a little bit "railroady"? This could be the side entrance to a Home Depot if 4449 wasn't sitting there.

It may not be so "railroady" to you, but here is a brand new engine house to help preserve and share the steam experience through these wonderful locomotives with the public. I'm thankful for that. Perhaps someone could have stepped forward with a huge donation to fund a more historic "railroady" looking building, but I think they have taken care of everything important with this new building and I wish them the best of luck in inspiring a new generation to love steam, which a live steam locomotive will do a lot better than the building in which it is worked on will.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the ORHF! The new facility will no doubt become a great tourist draw for the City of Portland and looks like an amazing facility where the public will get to see a little bit of the massive amount of work it takes to restore and operate these beautiful machines. I can't wait to see it myself.

The money used to build this facility was entirely from donations and fundraisers. They did a fantastic job of providing a new home for three fine steam engines that is secure and dry. Those who might find its appearance bland could always get out their checkbook for the next addition.

Upon further reflection, and viewing the foundation website, I stand by my comment. The architect came up with a design that is just plain ugly. Perhaps we have forgotten how to build aesthetically pleasing structures (that need not be budget-busters).
