Outstanding photo of these big beasts! Always liked the BB version of these units better, its a shame none of these were preserved.

As a Topekan, I give props to this image, though taken about a dozen years before I was on the scene!

"Might lak a Mallet": I immediately knew I had seen this before. It was a great two-page frontispiece in the December 1968 issue of Trains---with the text by non other than David P. Morgan. Thanks for sharing the color version this time. For a guy who can snap a 35mm shutter and then the shutter on a 4X5 Speed Graphic, you surely must be able to walk and chew gum at the same time as well!

What is the HP rating for these monsters.
Posted by Renee on July 17, 2012
I honestly do not know if it would apply to the U50's, but I have an article on the U50C's stating that they had 6600 hp with two 16 cylinder 645E3A engines each rated at 3300 hp. If anyone else has different info please add it to the comments.

Great photo from the archives! I believe these units were 5000HP.

U50 + 5000 hp - basically two U25B's on a single frame. Anybody want to spend 12 hours sitting in the cab right next to the forward radiator fan? The U50C rearranged the machinery so the fans were in the middle of the carbody.

Ronald - they were 5,000hp.

Undoubtedly the best photo of these monsters in service that I have seen. I was fortunate to catch them on SP before they met their fate. Gosh, I wish they had been better because the look so good. Well, I guess I've said that about a lot of things.

I have never operated anything with that much horsepower. 3500 best I can get
