This is the BEST NS heritage paint scheme yet!

I know it is not really very colorful but this is the one that holds alot of memories for me. My dad and I would spend many a weekends catching one going through Carlisle before going fishing. Another great job by Norfolk Southern!

The mating worms are back!

Not much to look at but who would've ever believed someone would paint a new Penn Central locomotive! Very cool!

I know about the corporate history of PC but I have always thought the paint scheme for its locomotives was creative (PC logo), to the point and professional. This edition of the Heritage Fleet is a superb effort.

Spectacular unit! One of the best so far...

Glad to see EMD got this one!

That might just be the best looking PC unit ever. The white sill stripe really helps and the chunky, angular carbody is a good match for the chuck-style logos and lettering.

I never really cared for the Penn Central scheme but I did grow up with it in New England. It looks really nice on an SD70ACe.

This is the paint scheme that my first "N" gauge engine had so many years ago..... What great memories this brings. Thank you NS for the memories and your heritage. Thank you Casey and NS for these great looking locomotives.

I'll agree ... not a very colorful railroad, and from an era when railroads saw lots of "falling flags." But this is a working-class, no frills paint scheme at a time when that seemed necessary, and it does look quite good on an ACe, in my opinion. Now I've got to find a place that sells Tab, because I'm thirsty for one all of the sudden, for some reason.

Well, to get to the Conrail years, I suppose railroading had to go through The Penn Central years. Still, this looks better than any PC unit I ever saw (except for Alco 6300 when it was new from the builder). Another great job NS!!!

The black PC scheme gives the already bold appearance of the SD70ACe a somewhat intimidating appearance. NS is really showing both class and a sincere nod to its history with the heritage paint schemes.

Not the most elegant of the Paint schemes, but you have to admit, it does look good when applied to an SD70ACe.

Man, this is sort of like a glimpse into an alternate universe where Penn Central survived into the modern era! Awesome photo NS!

I'm impressed also, it looks great. Great memories coming back ... Yes, as someone wrote, that white stripe really makes a difference.

Sometimes simplicity is a very good thing, in my opinion the scheme fits the 70ACe body very well. Great job NS, this would have to be my favorite heritage unit!
Posted by Matthew Harrell on June 25, 2012
I like it. I don't know how many NS units that I've seen over the years that have had the PC "mating worms" logo scrawled by some wag in the grime on their noses or fuel tanks. Now it's official, PENN CENTRAL lives!

Spectacular paint scheme, Norfolk Southern! This is one of my favorite railroads. They did it again!

Back in Black!!!
Posted by Waxyice on June 25, 2012
I think this looks great, and I love that NS did this. It would have been so easy for PC to be rejected because of the ignominious reputation.

And the hits keep on coming. What a treat, love all the heritage units!!! I cant get enough

Excellent job Progress rail paint dept. ..... That dark Brunswick Green looks flawless and so dark it looks black...... NS did the right thing in letting you paint these units. Is that the reflection of the New Jersey I see in the nose and on the plow...lol.

Sweet picture reliving the old memories
Posted by Mark Rosnick on June 25, 2012
Wow I'm in the twilight zone, now all we need is this to lead ENRO thru Shiremanstown on the old CV Branch and it's 1972 all over again. Plain but elegant.
Posted by Mike Auer on June 25, 2012
Even though the Penn Central scheme wasn't a flashy scheme, I always thought that scheme made a locomotive look like a real workhorse.
Posted by Jez Smith on June 25, 2012
Well said, Andy Fariss!
Posted by Sid Vaught on June 25, 2012
Well all 20 of the Heritage units should not outshine the NS paint job.
Posted by Blair Kooistra on June 25, 2012
Who woulda thought in 1972 that forty years later the appearance of a PC painted locomotive would induce rapture among railfans! No me! SPECTACULAR! Simple is usually best.
Posted by NYC Man on June 26, 2012
Right away, it reminded me the " junk yard " look when CR took over and the scheme was flat black with a tiny CR up near the side windows. Man they looked filthy.
Posted by Jake McGarvie on June 26, 2012
Wow!
Posted by Caleb Keefer on June 26, 2012
Nice looking loco, but NS has to give it a few dirt baths before it will really look authentic.
Posted by on June 26, 2012
Ehhh... not to thrilled. Celebrating failure if you ask me. I say if the PRR/NYC gets a PC unit, where is the EL unit for the Erie/DLW merger?
Posted by Pascal BANNEVILLE on June 27, 2012
This one recalls steam big power as the beautiful black paint seems to be satin rather than glossy. So I think to big steam locomotive looking at it. Gorgeous! My favorite one with the very modern interstate (and all the other in fact).

I was born long after Penn Central ceased operations so I apologize for my lack of nostalgia concerning PC and my favoritism of New Haven (Important fallen flag in my area.) Looking at old pictures, the "mating worms" logo aesthetically rubs me the wrong way. Plus, I despise how PC neglected some classic New Haven McGinnis livery units and made the classic Pennsy GG-1 look like a beached submarine with the PC livery treatment of black, dirt, worms, and rust. But NS (people who know how to make black livery beautiful) did a great job. That stripe detail makes a big difference.
