Want to say that I remember reading somewhere that outfits in the southeastern US, such as L&N, had an early interest in using concrete ties the in humid and swampy areas they passed through.

Much of the CN network between Toronto and Winnipeg ; and Edmonton and the Pacific use concrete ties. Mostly all "conforce"... I find they are easier to work with, hold the gauge better, and are a smoother ride.
