The blue actually originated on the Wabash and was adopted for a few years after Norfolk & Western merged with the Wabash. Most units painted Wabash blue suffered the same fate: their paint wore off and the primer on new units and black on most repaints (from Nickel Plate or the original N&W) were visible again. Hopefully this unit's paint holds up better than that.
