I would suggest that this photo was taken by Robert Brookman who was active in the area at the time and who somehow managed to get white steam to show against a blue sky (in monochrome of course) at a time before the introduction of panchromatic films. A nice scan Steve which I'm sure took a lot of patient work in Photoshop before it was presentable!

Thanks for the additional info and your kind comment Brian. Should anyone be interested, try Google Maps and drag the little man to the line-side, there's a 'panoramio' photo from pretty much this exact location. Should anyone doubt what uglification we've allowed to be inflicted on our landscape, it's a real shocker.
