That appears to be a temporary motor car set-off, so perhaps it was involved in some particular piece of MofW work at the time. In the heyday of these machines, motor car set offs were very common, particularly in long stretches with no grade crossings, spurs or other spots where they could be set-off to clear a train. Your decision to wait for the shot was very prudent--and well worth it. Very nice!
