Weird place to find an Amtrak E8 that's not attached to a train. I am guessing this one died and they are pulling it back to the yard. No trains originated or terminated in Raleigh at that time. Only the Silver Star at that point.

This is the ONLY Amtrak locomotive I've ever seen with an H5 horn. They are super rare.

It would be nice to see an E8 on the point of an Amtrak train nowadays... Just not in their current paint scheme.

Research I have been able to do indicates #251 is ex-SCL #594 which was retired and sold for scrap in July '74, just about a year after this photo. I totally agree with the Commenter who noted how it would be really great to have a few E units running with modern mechanicals built into their classic shells.
