I feel SORRY for those rail-fans who were not yet around, and thus have no memories of when a vast fleet of these beauties "roamed the earth."

Interesting red trim around the windows, matching the PRR's red keystone logo, I'm sure. Funny you should mention a GG1 making "heads turn". The actor Jack Nicholson was nominated for an Oscar as a profanity-launching career navy enlisted man in the 1973 film "The last detail", shot mainly on location on a journey from Norfolk, VA to New Hampshire. At one point in the movie, he and a fellow uniformed sailor are walking like two, well, tough sailors on a railway platform in Washington, D.C., Nicholson's character on the side closest to the tracks. As they saunter along a GG1 painted in Penn Central livery pulls up alongside them and honks its horn (dubbed or not, it was a deep monotone sounding much like that on Santa Fe locomotives which ran along the Clovis, NM-to-El Paso line I lived near as a kindergartener in 1965). Anyway, the horn sounds and Nicholson turns his head slowly toward the locomotive as if thinking: "Oh, there's a(n expletive) TRAIN next to me." It was a subtle but amusing moment in the film.

The Centennial Celebration of Washington Union Station was a very monumental project and I'm thankful to have been a very small part of it due to so many of the great people and organizations involved in making it one that went down in the history books. For those that don't know, there were 5 beautifully restored locomotives (including this GG1) that came into Washington for a public display for this occasion. It took a lot of planning, coordination and cooperation of many entities involved. I'm happy to be able to share some of these moments with you all and thrilled this photo made most popular in 24 hrs.

Rich, I was one of those railfans that didn't get to see these beauties firsthand. Only in vintage film :( I have always been in love with the GG1, beauty AND brawn!

I admire the GG-1 enough that I made my user handle on here the same as my PRRTHS #4913. This is a beautiful photo of my favorite type of electric locomotive.
