Cool find, seems like overkill on power for just a rail train though.

Yeah, it could be overkill, but the SD9043s are truly "disenfranchised." They're never going to be upgraded by EMD, and that essentially makes them "one-offs" that are more difficult to maintain, repair and return to service. It would seem that their fate is to live out their days as glorified road switchers, being babied. That they're still in UP paint is a miracle.
