Mark & Mike... I've been enjoying ALL your photo submissions of the Rock Island's St. Louis to KC main! Two decades or more ago, I remember learning that this line was left intact for future use. Lots of rumors have circulated over the years about it being rebuilt and reopened, but to the best of my knowledge, nothing has ever happened to get it running again. I understand it was purchased by the Cotton Belt back in the 80s, but now that the Cotton Belt and SP have been gobbled up by the UP, I presume there is no need for another route between St. Louis and Kansas City. Out of curiousity, I traveled to Meta on Google Earth, and sure enough, the track is still there along with most of the buildings that are seen in your photo. Sadly, the depot is gone and may have been razed before the Rock went out of business. I guess it is anyone's guess what will happen with this former Rock Island main line, but based on what I saw on Google Earth, it will take a lot of work to get this line open again if they ever decide to do so. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of how it used to be in Meta and Eldon and please share more photos with us from this now abandoned line...

Hi. I was wondering how I could purchase this photo to donate to an amazing fund raiser we're having in Meta. Please email me for information. rmsteinlage@embarqmail.com
