What a great shot! Based on the early morning low sun angle, this isn't the "GW" (which would have passed about midnight)---but perhaps train 4, the eastbound Sportsman. Number 4 would have passed about 6 AM or so during this era, so it's likely the train is running late this morning. In any event, this is a wonderful capture of the E8s when brand new (with their coupler shrouds still in place). A year earlier and this train would have been pulled by a 4-6-4. Before diesels, several miles ahead at Hinton, the power would be changed to a 4-8-4 Greenbrier, such as the 614, for the run over the mountains to Charlottesville, VA.
