Being interspersed between ex-PRR P-70 coaches, running out their last days, I would think this is probably an equipment set for Conrail's Chicago - Valparaiso, Indiana commuter service.

This is indeed a Valpariso train. The cars came to Chicago following the demise of the old EL Cleveland-Youngstown, OH "commuter" train. These original Lackawanna cars came in two nearly identical groups, one from ACF, which the two shown represent, and the others from Pullman. The latter had a raised belt rail under the windows and horizontal glass on the vestibule doors, while the P-S cars lacked the belt rail, had vertical glass in the doors but also sported outside swing hanger trucks. Some later went on to the D&H and later, the NYMTA for commuter service.

Certainly NO question which car I'd rather ride home from work in.
