But then again, by today's standards, nobody would ever tolerate delaying a train for the reason of "you don't take care of our engines like we do".

Possibly so, but the power frequently came back missing parts like bells, horns, hood doors, etc. It actually got to the point that RF&P would send an RF&P employee with the units when they were off line to insure that they were returned intact. The RFE spent more than a few days riding the units when they were on Conrail.
