A very nice catch, with a lot of train in view. I have seen the Ringling Brothers train many times in the last forty years, but I have never seen a freight car or any other non-circus car in these chartered moves. Having that gondola in there is very odd.

Because of the way newer locomotives and older passenger equipment is built there are problems having them coupled up next to each other. Newer locomotives with large anti-climbers can severely damage buffer plates, and diagphgrams on passenger cars. Since the second unit is pointed towards the passenger equipment this is the most likely reason for the buffer car there.
