Brings to mind the phrase from the folksong about the Rock Island, "Ya gotta ride it like ya find it, Get your tickets at the station . . ."

What a sad-looking train!

For some reason, I like the dirty/rustic feel of this photograph. Thanks for sharing Mr. Hamlin. Fantastic as always.

That trailing car is a former Norfolk & Western Budd-built, slab-sided 10-6 sleeper, that had been converted to coach for the Pennsy, circa 1964. Such early Budd 10-6s had a window pattern that was a mirror image on each side, and in the rebuilding, the sixth roomette window, (seventh window from the vestibule,) and first bedroom window were replaced by the two split picture windows to avoid a huge blank wall. This car is of the "snack bar" variety, as the closest two windows are blanked out to accommodate the "food" service. The pure NYC 2600-series coach ahead, is a big surprise at such a late date.

Penn Central must have decided to leave the car-cleaning to Amtrak. The NYC car doesn't look so bad but that rear car looks awful.
