The reason for no hoses is because the MU connection is electrical and the connection is to the right of the step-over recessed for protection. This unit was an origional purchase and units 633-640 (I think) were ex Monon units returned because they tore up their tracks! (Did the same on the LV but the units were cheap to purchase).

Yes, the multiple-unit connection (MU) is electrical, but multiple-unit air hoses were/are required between two or more locomotives in a multiple-unit consist (i.e., brake cylinder equalizing, main reservoir, and independent application & release/actuating hoses; hose set-up depends on air brake schedule [24-RL, 26-L, etc.] and whether or not the unit was set up for pneumatic or electric sanding control).
