I have it on good word that this was definately intended as a helper siding, so they could cut-off the head end and run back down the hill after clearing the train on the main.

That's right, the sidings were put in to aide in the cutting out of helper units. The tracks allowed the helpers to get out of the way until the mkain track was cleared for movement back to San Berdoo.
