Such a sad story. This poor engine was like a red headed step child...she was destined to other service before she even arrived at the railroad she was built for. Thanks for sharing.

My favorite steam locomotive of my favorite railroad. Very sad circumstances though. Oh how I wish at least one could have been saved. My understanding is that they were deemed to be too large for some of the tight clearances on the original "400" route through Wisconsin. They were used almost exclusively on the main between Chicago and Omaha pulling other passenger trains such as the"Challenger". Thank you for posting.

Though similar in design, I always preferred the looks of these CNW Hudsons to MILW's Hiawatha Hudsons. A pretty tasteful application of streamlining and classy paint job, in my opinion. Would love to have seen one at speed. Thanks for your historic photographs.
