The second and third Bi-Levels in this train represent the first order CNW recieved of the type. Built by St. Louis Car Co., were equipped to be steam-heated, required locomotive-mounted generators for lighting, and even served behind steam locomotives. The original paint scheme was green on top, but featured a yellow letterboard with a back stripe along its top and bottom edge, with a silver roadname outlined in black. When the later, Pullman-Standard cars, like the cab car shown here, arrived equipped for Push-Pull service and HEP-supplied heat, light and air conditioning, the St. Louis cars were upgraded to be compatible, and were repainted to match as well. This is a very well-composed photo, nicely incorporating the multi-track crossing.
