I hope they don't do more of these. I really don't like how the top of the cab looks, and how it overhangs over the windows.
Posted by Mike Lockwood on November 25, 2010
All it needs now is a set of buck-teeth.

Sure looks interesting, and ugly.

The roof appears to be unevenly tilted to the front as well. I have never seen a more ruined EMD, and I'm not sure if others will be any better.

I personally like it and applaud NS for giving us something else to look at in fresh paint other then GEVO's and SD70's.

I actually like this new cab design. That overhang will make a nice place to hang patio lights while you are camping out in a siding this summer. Good job NS!!

I'll add that the interior is very nice and has much more room than any other wide-cab unit. I think the numberboard overhang will come in handy as a sun-visor, but it may end up being a snow accumulator.

I'd be embarrassed to drive that thing... If you're going to fabricate a wide cab, why not just take a 60M/70M plan and replicate that?? Heck, a CN safety cab would look better than that! Slanted roof, unibrow, stubby nose. Damn ugly!

Looking at this makes me think of north Georgia mountains and banjos playing. Horribly in-bred ugly! But, I also applaud NS for doing something different

Looks cool, I like the visor/cab overhang. It beats looking at GEVO's all day!
Posted by vonfinkelstein on November 25, 2010
It looks like a Head Start bus with that protruding 'brow.'
Posted by Eric B. on November 25, 2010
This unit looks fantastic! They could have done without the extended brow, but this adds a nice variety and GE hasn't changed their cab in over 20+ years so no complaints here.
Posted by KWestRail on November 25, 2010
What an oddball unit, looks just as ugly as the Santa Fe SD75s!
Posted by J. C. Smith, Jr. on November 25, 2010
I agree this new look will take some "getting used to," but what is the function of the pan-top fan, situated over the central air intake, just to the right of the dynamic brake?
Posted by Alex La Hair on November 25, 2010
Haha I kind of like the unit too. Nice catch!
Posted by Brent Kneebush on November 25, 2010
Any idea what the new fan on top of the dynamic grid is? More cooling for the grid? The fan housing looks like it's off a GP7!

"Form follows function", therefore there is are reasons for these things. What they are, is currently an unknown. But, yeah, I would expect that at least in part there is an anti-glare function to the eyebrow: maybe from headlight backscatter as much as anything else.

I vote Chase Zickelfoose wins the grand prize for best description: "Unibrow!"
Posted by Pete Reynolds on November 26, 2010
I like it. I'm sure NS doesn't think about "looks" when they are designing a cab that will be unique to their locomotives. There is probably a full bath in there somewhere too.
Posted by JoshRadcliffe on November 26, 2010
They ruined it when they replaced the front windows with the plain rectangle windows of the SD 70 M-2 and ACe.
Posted by FSWood on November 26, 2010
Original windows did look good, but we ain't the one writing the checks for custom shaped replacement glass; simpler is cheaper.
Posted by Josh Dulak on November 26, 2010
Horrid... should have put a little more planning into the cab design.
Posted by Jamey Rickens on November 26, 2010
UGLY! Whew. I thought the 70M-2's and the 70ACe's were bad until I saw this thing. Hopefully it stays down South. By the way this is the unit the cab let loose from the crane and dropped onto the floor at Juniata.
Posted by Duane Reese on November 28, 2010
The overhanging number boards on this unit almost seem like a throwback to how they overhung on the standard "spartan" cab, prior to the Canadian cabs of today. I get the same impression when I see the inner width and shape of the SD-70ACe nose. They are almost like echoes from the past.

Form follows function, sure I get it, but ugly also follows function too. Two words came to mind within seconds of seeing this, unibrow and Neanderthal (both of which have already been used in several of the comments posted ahead of mine). I'm ok with the larger front deck as I'm sure the crews that work on this unit will appreciate too, but to get the larger deck they flattened out the nose, kinda ugly. Reminds me of Amtraks old P30CH Pooch. I'm also ok with the rectangular windshield, though I think the FP45, 60M, 70M, style would look better. HOLY COW, WHAT A BROW! Sunshade, sure, that can be nice at certain parts of the day and maybe there are even blower vents to blow warm air to melt snow and ice, but I think it needs a little more tweaking. And pan top fans only look good on units who's designation numbers end in 24 or fewer. Now just to be clear on my opinions here, I think P30CH's are ugly and neat looking at the same time. I NOW like ACe's and M-2's as they're kind of mean looking. They remind me of old Winnebago RV's which I NOW think are cool. I didn't like either at first. And I like the 60M/70M style cabs and noses.

Sweet, they put a visor on it.

Here in Mexico it is normal to see engines like this one, with some unusual and weird fixtures. In other hand is great to see this, becouse it shows how people can create things and add some style at the same time. Great catch Casey, Saludos.

Three things... 1) The fan over the air-intake filters... might that be some sort of intercooling assembly for use in upgraded emissions controls? 2) WHAT use is that vertical hand rail? I'd hate to have to try to maintain 3-points of contact with that. 3) If they can install new wide-noses for these units, WHY couldn't they install wide noses on the 6300s?

Dang that overhang from the roof looks like its wearing a baseball cap.

I love this engine I cant wait to see one again. I would love to drive this engine I don't care what everyone else says about it I love these engines. Awesome job NS!
