What's the likelihood that at some point in the future they will be sandblasted out of existence?

Well, they've lasted this long. Although, Tacoma has been known to remove ICONIC MARKERS before! The greater likelihood is that the bridge will be replaced. With Sound Transit's D to M street extension underway, who knows. I don't believe a project is currently in the works, or budgeted (I'm not certain), there could be a replacement sometime in the foreseeable future.

Great photo and story, Nick; I'll have to check this out next time I'm in Tacoma. Unless some calamity occurs, it's probable that the trestle will continue to faithfully serve Sounder, Tacoma Rail and -- a few years -- Amtrak trains until the Point Defiance Bypass double-tracking is extended from 66th Street to Reservation as part of the final PNWRC build-out for 110mph corridor trains.
