Is the crew ok?

Was the crew asleep? No positive train stop? This shows, I think, why shortlines should not run at night.

The crew is ok. On this job, as I understand it, the conductor rides in a pickup truck to throw switches, lower and raise this bridge (the controls are on one side of the canal, if he rode in the locomotive, how would the bridge be lowered once the train crossed?) There are rumors as to what happened but they are just that, rumors. This line runs on the east side of Chesapeake, VA essentially paralleling RT 168 (those of you who may have gone to the Outer Banks/Cape Hatteras may have see it) approximately 7 miles east of my home, but there is never has been a great deal of traffic. I've seen perhaps 2 trains on it in 10 years. Attribute that to simply not being in the right place at the right time... I have the radio feed from this line on RailroadRadio.net along with NS and CSX in the Hampton Roads area at: http://www.railroadradio.net/content/view/171/204/
