Was she actually acting as a helper or just running behind the train?

In actuality, she ran around the train just past Oxbow Curve to pull her back to Jim Thorpe. This due to the the fact that steam was the sole power for these excursions with out a diesel in sight. Consequently, this made for an interesting photo op even if, upon closer inspection, the engineer is leaning out looking at the tracks ahead, so to speak. With a consist of 5 nearly full passenger cars, the caboose was a nice addition providing many with quite a unique experience while not otherwise interfering with many photo ops.
