I can't believe they were still around that late. i wish I was not 16 and did not give a hoot that year. i would have been all over that!

Actually, disregard my previous comment. There's no way these two units could operate like this, because the turbine was located in the "B" section. If I remember right, the "A" section had a small diesel engine that was only useful for moving the locomotive (without any cars) or for starting the turbine.

The gas turbine concept should be re-visited. According to Boone Pickens, if America converted all 18-wheelers from diesel to natural gas, we could lower our dependence on OPEC by 50%. Isn't it amazing that technology used by Union Pacific 50 years ago could now come back as a way to make our country energy sufficient? Great photo, John
