I like the juxtaposition of the tilted cars and the doghouse(?) or whatever the structure is, giant coalcars take out a house!

This almost looks like HO scale cars derailed on a N scale layout. Very interesting picture.

There are few more maddening tasks than rerailing derailed cars in a residential area. Coal cars in general are a major pain in that the load in them can spill out on the ground and it is not easily "cleaned up" and they are around the 380,000 pound range when fully loaded. The property owners in this incident probably have a lawyer all lined up to sue everyone they think they can sue, CSX, the mine operator, the consignee, and any one else they can find.

cmdrflake: The current maximum gross weight permitted for four-axle rail cars in the US is 315,000 lbs, but by no means are all lines capable of handling such loads.

My FIRST thought: "What are THEY doing in my garden?"

If I owned the home, I think I'd install a coal furnace and make a deal to keep the lading that spilled on my property! :)
