I'm surprised you could get that much traction from a rubber tire on a rail.

Well, you get more traction from a rubber tire than a metal wheel. On level ground, it's really no surprise that the trackmobile can move a single locomotive.

The trackmobile looks like a Hendrickson crane carrier chassis, obviously much shorter, with hi-rail gear added. Also note the planetary hubs front and rear, indicating all wheel drive.
