The ,,dual gauge" is for Ukrainian trains that runs on Berlibas - Valea Viseului - Sighetu Marmatiei - Campulung la Tisa - Teresava route. Due to the mountains in the area, the distance between the two Ukrainian towns (Berlibas and Teresava) is shorter by entering in Romania. The Ukrainians use broad-gauge rails (1524 mm) and the Romanians use normal-gauge rails (1435mm). The usage of three rails (one common to both gauges) is not possible, because two of the rails will be to close of each other and they will be impossible to fix on the ties... therefore they put four rails (two for 1435 mm gauge and two for 1524 mm gauge).
