I believe that the G stood for steam Generator equipped. There was space allowed for a steam generator in the car body of these units. I was at Joliet Union Station at about the same time period and did shoot one of these but it was not leading. Finding one of these at all was lucky, finding two running elephant style leading was very very lucky ! I believe there was a photo of one of these in the first Diesel Spotters Guide showing one in the passenger scheme. There were not many of these built.

These would have to be the UGLIEST locomotive ever built. Even the Pooches had some appeal to their blunt styling! As for the number built, if I recall correctly, it was only 6, and the ATSF had all of them.

These units were built for passenger service, and were most definitely meant to lead a train - I saw them leading "San Diegans" (as the only power) and on the front of the "Super C" piggyback train. And, as noted in an earlier comment, there was only six built, so catching one-third of them on a single train is quite a catch! And a great shot, too.
