What a consequence the year 1984 locomotive SP 8984. Maybe the year 1989 was a better year for this engine.

The SP 8984 is an interesting unit in that it was one of 12 SP SD45's to wear homeshop constructed "elephant ear" shrouds over the flared radiator section on both sides. Obviously from the photo, this SP experiment did not last to long. And FYI for Michael, the SP 8984 never made it to see 1989... in fact it never made it to 1985 most likely meaning it was scrapped offsite after this incident. Interestingly, four other "lucky" SP SD45's in the SP 8980-89 series made it through SP's GRIP rebuild program as SP 7400 class SD45R's.
