Something very bad once happened here. A large packer type garbage truck, being driven by a driver who had made a wrong turn. Was attempting to return to his route, and did not know the height of his truck. He was on a rural road when he passed under an approach span to this bridge, striking it and knocking the tracks out of alignment. Sadly no attempt was made to contact the L & N railroad. Prior to the accident that resulted, the three spans at the left in Joe's photo were actually two through trusses like the one at the right edge of this photo. The motive power on the next north bound freight actually made it across the bridge, but their train did not. A massive derailment occurred taking out the trusses. Students and staff at a near by school had to be evacuated because of the fire and other hazards that resulted. One of those hazards was a car load of bombs going to Fort Knox, Ky. I was at a safety convention in Louisville several years later and a presenter stated that Sixty Eight, Local, State, and Federal Agencies were involved in the incident. R.J. Corman Derailment Division performed the bulk on the clean up. As can be seen in Joe's photo, the structure was not rebuilt as the double track bridge that it had been. Note the pier width difference below the locomotives in the photo.
