Let's be fair, GE/Erie is laying off lots of workers too, as new locomotive orders are almost at a standstill! And since parent GE is such a broad-based company (GE Finance is the nation's largest, non-bank lending company,) it's feeling the pinch across its entire spectrum of businesses. GM sold EMD in order to raise cash to support its core business, automobiles, so those past gas "shortages" hurt EMD more than GE/Erie. Now GE is suffering too. And, on the automobile front, even Toyota sales are down 49% from a year ago. This crisis is hurting everyone!
